Beneath My Skin
Born in country Victoria, June migrates to the city of Melbourne to settle into a daily routine that veers nowhere from the same job, the same dress, the same cardigan, the same train journey every weekday. For forty years. Then comes April, a 30-something weirdo who gives June a makeover and they become friends recognising mutual childhoods that defy logic.
June wants to know the truth about her family. April wants to help her. At the same time, June discovers a new sexual desire in herself that she hadn’t known existed. For some, life begins at forty, for June it comes later. Is it possible to have a coming of age at 62? Early reader commentsA great ending. It tied up so many ends for the reader – very satisfying and believable.
I loved the quick pace. There was always something happening or about to happen. |
Some of you may be aware that I have a tree mania. I just don’t seem to be able to help myself including a tree in a starring role in all of my books.
The above photo shows one of my favourite places to eat, drink and talk with family and friends in Rapel, Chile, back in the 1970s. I’ve never forgotten the sunny days sitting in the shade of the tree overlooking el lago Rapel. Despite the fact I haven’t been back for 30+ years, that tree and that table/bench are still vivid in my memory. |
I’m a very visual writer so, when I need to ‘see’ a location as I lay it down on the page, I often refer to an image &/or create one for myself. Take, for instance, this plan of a house that I found in a real estate magazine. I tweaked it to suit my characters and had them moving from room to room and outside to where I placed that tree. I also used a similar method when creating the homes where my main characters lived in that Chelsea street in ‘Shattered Reflections’.

Merv & Melba – hot stars in Beneath My Skin. Much cherished by June (and me, incidentally). You’ll probably end up besotted as well.
